Dr. Scott Oliphint on Apologetics and Doctrine of Scripture (Pt. 1 of 3)

Part 3:
One thought on “Covenantal Apologetics”
I always appreciate Scott Oliphint’s teachings with regard to presuppositional apologetics. We should understand that belief is given by God to the ones he has chosen. Election. Evidential apologetics can be useful, but it has it’s limits. Logic cannot provide a foundation for belief for the non-Elect.
Rom 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
If a person rejects the Word of Christ, no amount of evidential apologetics will change that.
The gospel is a presuppositional truth given by God.
We are told to give reason for our belief (hope):
1Pe_3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
But that reason is going to founded on faith which is always presuppositional. Christians should not be influenced by the popular worldly idea that all truths must be proven to the satisfaction of the unbeliever in order to be valid. It’s easy to get pulled into thinking that the gospel is preached through evidential apologetics.
